Newbie Mains

October/November 2013

October and November were extremely busy months for Newbiemains Simmentals. Between Bull Sales and Calf Shows we seemed to be constantly on the road. Winter is also in full swing with all cows and calves (born before the end of September) being settled to outwintering fields and those close to calving(usually within 2 weeks) being brought inside to calve. We will try and have some photos of our outwinterd cows and calves and newborns in the December News.

The highlight of this years calf shows was being the Reserve overall Simmental Champion & Male Champion, with Newbiemains Dominator, at Agri Expo H&H Borderway mart, Carlisle. Newbiemains Devotion also won her class here with Dollyburd and Eleanor taking third and fourth prizes respectively.

Winning her class, on her first outing to the calf shows, was Newbiemains Eclypse at the ‘Stars of the Future Show’ held at its new venue United Auctions Stirling. Eclypse not shy to the showing circuit, having been show throughout the summer with her mother, Carralavin Wynn.

In between shows we took two bulls to the November Show and Sale at H&H Borderway Mart Carlisle. The bulls stood first and second in the Junior Bull Class. On a tricky day of trading, Newbiemains Dino who took first in his class, he was the highest priced bull sold through the ring at 4,000gns. Dino was purchased by Messers G D Roberts, Gwynedd, Wales. We wish the Roberts family all the success with their new stockbull.

As we mentioned in last months news we had heifers entered for the ‘Simmental Leading Ladies Sale’ at H&H Borderway Market in Carlisle. The sale was a great success for us. Newbiemains Connie was the Supreme Champion in the presale show and was the highest price on the day at 8000gns. She was sold to Mr & Mrs Shepherd in Berkshire. Second highest price of the day went to Newbiemains Charmer and she went to the Duff Family in Brechin.

This month seems to have gone in very quickly. At the moment we are working on getting bulls ready for the October sale at United Auctions in Stirling and the November sale at H&H Borderway Market in Carlisle. Calf training for the November calf shows is also in full swing.

The month got off to a flying start with our local show at Dumfries. We had the Champion and Reserve Simmental. The Champion was a homebred heifer ‘Newbiemains Calamity Jane’. Shown as a calf, she won her class the the ‘Borderway Agri-Expo 2012’ at Carlisle.

Reserve was ‘Carralavin Wynn’ with her calf at foot ‘Newbiemains Eclipse’. Wynn was also the Simmental Champion at this years Cumberland Show.

It has been a busy month with finishing silage and trying to get young bulls halter trained but we seem to be getting there. We also have a couple of heifers entered for the ‘Leading Ladies Sale’ at H & H Carlisle in September, so plenty to keep everyone busy!
